Camden Man, 20, Surrenders In Fatal Shooting: Prosecutor

A 20-year-old man from Camden has been charged with murder and weapons offenses for the fatal shooting of a 31-year-old man last week, authorities said.

Jason Mcallister surrendered himself to authorities at approximately 4:50 p.m. on Monday, May 23 and was taken into custody at the Camden County Metro Police Department Administration Building, they said.

Mcallister is charged with Murder in the fatal shooting of Luis Vazquez-Garcia on Tuesday, May 17, according to according to Camden County Prosecutor Grace C. MacAulay and Camden County Police Chief Gabriel Rodriguez. 

On Tuesday, May 17, at approximately 9:24 p.m., Camden County Metro Police Department received a ShotSpotter activation for shots fired at 721 State St, in Camden. 

Responding officers arrived to find a male victim, identified as 31-year-old Luis Vazquez-Garcia suffering from apparent gunshot wounds inside of a vehicle, they said.

Vazquez-Garcia was taken to Cooper University Hospital by responding units and pronounced dead at 9:34 p.m., by Dr. Echeverria-Ramos of Cooper University Hospital.

Mcallister was being held in the Camden County Correctional Facility.

This is an ongoing investigation between the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Camden County Police Department.
